Introduction to Medical Professional Liability Insurance provides an overview of the institutions and individuals that MedPLI protects, and a brief history of MedPLI. This course will explain what Medical Professional Liability insurance is, and the types of healthcare practitioners that should purchase it. It will review the two main forms of coverage, occurrence and claims-made, and why claims-made coverage is preferable for these types of long tail exposures. The discussion will review how coverage is triggered on occurrence and claims-made forms, and which policy provisions are key to adequately analyzing the coverage provided on these policies. The course will outline the differences between hospital Professional Liability (HPL) and Physicians Professional Liability (PPL), including differences in exposures they face, how coverage is rated, and the common types of medical professional liability claims they face. It also touches on exposures and types of claims for dentists and other allied healthcare professionals.
