Professional Liability Underwriting Society Announces Carl Metzger as the 2026 Founders Award Recipient

The Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) is pleased to announce that Carl Metzger, Partner at Goodwin Procter, LLP, is the recipient of the 2026 PLUS Founders Award. The prestigious recognition will be presented as part of the 39th annual PLUS Conference during the opening general session featuring Jesse Cole on November 10, at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. The annual national event brings industry professionals together for an unmatched opportunity to connect, learn, and recognize outstanding achievements across the professional liability insurance industry.

The PLUS Founders Award acknowledges an outstanding member of PLUS who has made lasting and remarkable contributions to the Society. Named in honor of PLUS Founder, Angelo J. Gioia, this award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to PLUS and has significantly influenced the professional liability insurance landscape.

The selection process for the Founders Award considers various criteria, including active membership in PLUS, involvement in PLUS activities, creative problem-solving and innovation in addressing PLUS tasks, dedication of time and effort to the organization, promotion of PLUS within the industry and the public, contributions to enhancing the image of PLUS, and active participation in developing, implementing, improving and sustaining PLUS programs.

Carl currently serves as Chair of the Goodwin Procter, LLP’s global Litigation Department and as Chair of the firm’s Risk Management & Insurance Practice. He also serves as a member of the firm’s Management Committee. His clients include both public and private companies, major insurance carriers and brokerages, private equity and venture capital firms and non-profit and educational institutions. Carl is recognized as an expert in advising boards of directors and senior officers on liability and risk management issues, as well as D&O insurance, indemnification and fiduciary duty issues. Additionally, he has played leading roles in a variety of professional and civic organizations, including past President and board member of PLUS and the Squam Lakes Conservation Society.
