Career Path Spotlight: Rebecca Finneran | Senior Director of Underwriting and Insurance Brokerage, Illinois Health and Hospital Association
How you got started in the insurance industry?
After losing my job, I accepted a temporary position covering a maternity leave at an insurance carrier in my area. I became a permanent employee seven months later. At the time, I knew nothing about medical malpractice insurance—few people in my hometown even knew what the company did, since the building had no signage and locals joked it was the CIA. Since then, I’ve grown from reviewing policy documents and issuing credentialing letters to leading an underwriting department. This August marks 20 years since I took that temp role, a decision that completely changed the course of my life.
Can you provide a description of your current role?
I am currently the Senior Director of Underwriting and Insurance Brokerage, handling the professional liability coverage for hospital members of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association. I handle everything from individual provider new business applications to reinsurance renewals and placing specialty coverages including D&O and cyber for our hospital members and their employed physicians.
What are the most relevant/important skills someone looking to follow your career path should work on developing?
I would say a love of learning, willingness to ask questions, as well as verbal and written communication skills are important in this industry. Every day I am learning something new. I never have the same day twice, so flexibility and adaptability are equally important.
What advice do you have for someone not currently in your career field that has an interest in following your career path?
Be brave and put yourself out there. Reach out to leaders in the industry and ask questions. I knew nothing about insurance when I started, but I asked lots of questions and was willing to step outside of my comfort zone.
Is it a good time for someone new to join the industry?
Yes! Our industry needs fresh ideas and people.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I enjoy being a mentor to others in the industry and supporting them in achieving their goals. I have been lucky to have amazing mentors throughout my career who helped me learn and get to where I am today, and I love getting to give back.
