The Current State of Ransomware Attacks in 2023

Ransomware attacks continue to rise in 2023. This podcast addresses the state of the cyber response to these attacks as well as the U.S. governments National Cyber Security Strategy and the FBIs recently announced heightened proactive strategy to disrupt ransomware threat actors. Questions remain as to whether these actions will lead to a decrease in the number of ransomware attacks that business entities sustain, or whether an increase in ransomware attacks will occur as a result of the decentralization of the threat actors. The presenters also discuss how these actions could affect the claims and underwriting environment for insurers and their insureds.

Ryan, a principal consultant at Unit 42, is a digital forensic analyst, malware reverse engineer, leader, trainer, and speaker with more than a decade of experience. Ryan lives and breathes the digital forensic and incident response lifestyle, often opting to research new threats or pull apart malware in his off time. He appreciates and supports lifelong learning, which is why he helps coordinate the hacker/security conference CactusCon in his local area of Phoenix, Arizona. Ryan is the author of the new SANS forensics course on ransomware, FOR528: Ransomware for Incident Responders, previously taught SANS FOR610: Reverse Engineering Malware, and is an author for PluralSight. He is also an avid speaker, having presented workshops and talks at conferences including DefCon, BSides events, CactusCon, various SANS Summit events, and ResponderCon. Ryan also enjoys competing in blue team-oriented capture the flag events. He has been a part of first-place teams at Recon InfoSecs SOCX Professional SOC XTeam Championship (2021), DefCon 29s OpenSOC competition (2021), and multiple DefCon Network Forensics Puzzle Contests (Defcon 22 and 23). In addition to being a SANS author/instructor and holding several SANS certifications, he helps co-chair SANS yearly Ransomware Summit, often appears on SANS webcasts, and helps proctor SANS digital forensics and incident response NetWars tournament.
