In today’s fast-paced professional landscape, mentorship has become a vital component of career development. As a mentor in the PLUS Mentorship Program, I’ve had the privilege of guiding young professionals and sharing insights from my years of experience. One such rewarding experience is mentoring Harmony Tan, a Liability & Financial Lines Underwriter at MAPFRE RE in Singapore.

The Mentorship Journey

The PLUS Mentorship Program is a unique opportunity that connects experienced leaders with aspiring professionals in the professional lines community. It focuses on career advancement, networking, and goal setting, offering participants a chance to learn from industry experts.

Harmony and I have been collaborating on a structured schedule that allows us to delve into various industry topics. We meet monthly, either over lunch or in the evening, to discuss a specific area of interest. This focused approach helps us maximise the learning experience.

Regional Exchange

Our mentorship relationship is enriched by our regional backgrounds. As a mentor based in Hong Kong, I bring over 10 years of experience in Financial Lines. Harmony, hailing from Singapore, contributes her own insights from her years in the insurance industry. This cross-regional exchange allows us to share diverse perspectives and understand market dynamics in both locations.

Reverse Mentoring

Interestingly, our mentorship has evolved into a form of reverse mentoring. While I provide guidance on Financial Lines, Harmony offers fresh perspectives on industry trends and practices from Singapore. This mutual exchange of knowledge enhances both our professional growth.

A Collaborative Effort

Our discussions are not limited to formal meetings. We frequently touch base via Teams or WhatsApp to ensure a flexible and responsive mentorship experience. This adaptability is crucial in addressing any immediate questions Harmony may have as she navigates her career path.

The Impact of Mentorship

Mentorship is more than just imparting knowledge; it’s about fostering a supportive relationship where both mentor and mentee can grow. For me, mentoring Harmony has been an enriching experience. Her enthusiasm and commitment to learning inspire me, and I look forward to seeing her progress in the industry.
